Do you pay pension during a gap between jobs? Even a short gap can require a procedure

Short answer

If there is a gap between leaving one company and joining the next, even for only part of a month, you may need to switch to Category 1 National Pension for that period.

However, a gap does not automatically mean you must pay a separate National Pension premium for that whole month.

If you join the new company during the same month

Example: you leave on March 31 and join Employees’ Pension at a new company on April 16. You are Category 1 from April 1 to 15, but you are in Employees’ Pension at the end of April. In the Japan Pension Service example, no National Pension premium is due for April. The Category 1 enrollment procedure for April 1 is still required.

If you are still Category 1 at month-end

If you remain outside Employees’ Pension through the end of the month, the National Pension premium for that month is generally due.

What matters

Check the date you left your old employer, the date Employees’ Pension starts at your new employer, and your status at the end of the month.
