Having a residence card does not automatically mean that you may do any job in Japan. Your permitted work depends on your status of residence.
1. Statuses that allow specified types of work
Statuses such as Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Specified Skilled Worker, Nursing Care, and Skilled Labor allow work within the scope defined for that status. Even after changing employers, the actual duties must remain within the permitted scope.
2. Statuses that generally do not allow work
Student, Dependent, and Cultural Activities are not employment statuses. In many cases, a person may work only after obtaining permission to engage in activities outside their status. For Student and Dependent status, a general permission commonly allows work up to 28 hours per week.
3. Statuses with no general occupational restriction
Permanent Resident, Spouse or Child of Japanese National, Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident, and Long-Term Resident generally have no restriction on the type of paid work.
Designated Activities must be checked individually
“Designated Activities” is not one single category. The permitted activity may be working holiday, job hunting, preparation for Specified Skilled Worker, or another individually designated activity. The designation document attached to the passport is important.
