Changed Jobs or Resigned in Japan? The 14-Day Immigration Notification Rule

When you resign or change jobs, do not assume that your employer handles every immigration procedure for you. Depending on your status, you personally may have to notify Immigration within 14 days.

Work statuses: ending and starting contracts

For statuses including Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Nursing Care, Skilled Labor, and Specified Skilled Worker, a notification is generally required when a contract ends or when a new contract is concluded.

Technical Intern Training and Student status

For certain activity-based statuses such as Technical Intern Training or Student, leaving or moving to another affiliated organization may also require notification.

A notification is not permission to work

This is important. Filing the notification does not automatically authorize work at the new organization. For example, duties under Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services must still fall within that status. A Specified Skilled Worker who changes employers needs a separate change-of-status application.

If 14 days have already passed

Do not simply ignore it. Immigration advises people who discover a missed notification to file it promptly. Failure to notify or making a false notification can affect future procedures and may carry penalties.
