Moving to or within Chiba City: address-change checklist

Moving in Japan can involve several procedures at once: registering your new address, updating your residence card and My Number records, insurance, utilities, bank information and other services. This guide focuses on moves within Chiba City or to Chiba City.

1. If you move within Chiba City

In principle, you need to submit a 転居届 (tenkyo-todoke; change-of-address notice) within 14 days after you begin living at the new address. You cannot submit it before the actual move.

2. Foreign residents: remember your residence card

Foreign residents should also bring their residence card (在留カード) or Special Permanent Resident Certificate to have the new address recorded. Required documents vary by situation, so consult the city’s guidance before visiting.

3. If you move to Chiba City from another municipality in Japan

You will need to file a 転入届 (tennyū-todoke; moving-in notice). Chiba City instructs residents to complete this procedure within 14 days of starting to live at their new address.

4. If you move to Chiba City from overseas

You must also register your address after you begin living in Chiba City. Check the city’s specific guidance for required documents and procedures for people arriving from overseas.

5. Other items to check after registering your new address

  • My Number Card and other documents showing your address
  • National Health Insurance and pension procedures, where applicable
  • Your children’s school or nursery, if relevant
  • Electricity, gas, water and internet services
  • Bank accounts, credit cards and mobile phone contracts
  • Postal forwarding or a change-of-address request at Japan Post
  • Your employer’s address records

Which items apply depends on your residence situation, household and insurance coverage. Not everyone needs every procedure listed above.
