Specified Skilled Worker (i) is a work status for designated industrial fields facing labor shortages. It is different from Technical Intern Training in both purpose and legal structure.
Main features
- Work must be in an eligible industrial field.
- Skills and Japanese-language tests are generally required.
- The total period of stay is generally limited to five years.
- The employer or support organization must provide required support.
- Family accompaniment is generally not permitted under SSW (i).
Test exemptions after Technical Intern Training
A person who has satisfactorily completed Technical Intern Training (ii) may be exempt from the Japanese-language test. If the previous training occupation is sufficiently related to the intended SSW work, the skills test may also be exempted.
Can an SSW worker change employers?
Yes, but changing the affiliated organization requires an application for change of status of residence. As a rule, the worker should not begin working for the new employer until permission has been granted.
Resigning does not immediately erase the status of residence, but starting work at another company without the required procedure can create serious immigration problems.
