Student Status in Japan: 28-Hour Work Rule and What Happens After Graduation

The purpose of the Student status is study. The Student status by itself does not authorize paid work.

Part-time work requires separate permission

With general permission to engage in activities outside the status, a student may generally work up to 28 hours per week. During long school vacations defined by the school, work may be permitted up to eight hours per day.

If you have more than one job, the 28-hour limit applies to the total. Work connected with adult-entertainment businesses is prohibited.

Can you continue a student part-time job after graduation?

Once your studies are completed, you cannot simply keep relying on the student work permission indefinitely. To work full-time after graduation, you normally need to change to an appropriate work status such as Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services.

If you have not found a job yet

Graduates of eligible universities and vocational schools may, if conditions are met, change to Designated Activities for continued job hunting. A separate Designated Activities status may also be available when a job offer has been received but employment starts later.
