Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services: Jobs, Job Changes and Renewal

Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services is one of the most common work statuses in Japan, but it does not permit every kind of job.

What work is covered?

Typical examples include engineering, IT, design, accounting, marketing, translation, interpretation, language instruction, and other work requiring specialized knowledge or abilities based on foreign culture.

Education or experience and the actual job matter

Immigration examines whether the applicant’s education or professional experience relates appropriately to the job. A position consisting mainly of simple manual work may fall outside this status.

Can you change employers?

Yes. If the new duties remain within the scope of this status, a job change may be possible without first changing to a different status. However, when a contract ends or a new contract is concluded, the foreign national generally must notify Immigration within 14 days.

If there is uncertainty about whether the new job fits the current status, a Certificate of Authorized Employment can be useful.

What matters at renewal?

Immigration may review the duties, remuneration, stability of employment, tax and residence record, and documents relating to the new employer.
