Do you pay pension while temporarily outside Japan? Keeping or removing your Japanese address

Short answer

Going back to your home country for a few months does not automatically stop Japanese pension. The key questions are whether you still have an address in Japan and whether you continue to be enrolled in Employees’ Pension through your employer.

Temporary trip while keeping your resident address

A Category 1 National Pension insured person who still has an address in Japan generally remains covered even while temporarily abroad. A trip home by itself does not stop the premiums.

If you actually move overseas and file a moving-out notification

Category 1 National Pension is based on having an address in Japan. If you genuinely move overseas and no longer have a Japanese address, Category 1 coverage ends. If you later receive a bill for months when you were properly registered as living overseas, it may be worth checking whether the pension record reflects your moving-out date before paying.

If you stay in Employees’ Pension

Some people remain employed by a Japanese company and stay enrolled in Employees’ Pension even while temporarily abroad. Removing your resident address does not automatically mean Employees’ Pension ends.

Important

Your resident registration should reflect where you actually live. It should not be changed only to avoid pension premiums.
