If you leave Japan temporarily and want to return under the same status of residence, you need to understand Japan’s re-entry system.
Special re-entry permission
Eligible mid- to long-term residents who hold a valid passport and residence card can generally use special re-entry permission if they intend to return within one year from departure.
If the current period of stay expires before that one-year point, the special re-entry deadline is the earlier expiration date.
Regular re-entry permission
If you expect to stay outside Japan for more than one year, you may apply for regular re-entry permission before departure. Its validity can be granted for up to five years, but not beyond the current authorized period of stay.
What if the deadline passes?
If you do not return within the valid re-entry period, you generally cannot re-enter using the previous status of residence. This is also important for Permanent Residents.
A residence card that still looks valid does not by itself guarantee re-entry. Check both your period of stay and your re-entry deadline before leaving Japan.
