The Dependent status is generally for a spouse or child who is financially supported by a foreign national holding an eligible status of residence in Japan.
Dependent status does not itself authorize work
The main purpose of the status is family life while being supported. Paid work therefore requires permission to engage in activities outside the status.
With general permission: usually up to 28 hours per week
A person with the appropriate general permission may generally work up to 28 hours per week. If there are multiple jobs, the hours are added together.
For full-time employment, change status first
If a person obtains a full-time job that qualifies for another status, such as Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services, Nursing Care, or Specified Skilled Worker, the person should apply to change status before beginning full-time work.
If the family relationship changes
Dependent status is based on the supporting family relationship. Divorce, death, or another major change may create notification or status-change issues, so the situation should not simply be left unchanged.
