Questions such as “Does my status disappear as soon as I resign?” or “Can I lose permanent residence by living abroad?” are common. Several different legal situations are often confused.
Expiration of the period of stay
If you let your period of stay expire without a timely renewal or change application, you generally cannot continue lawful residence. If a proper application was filed before expiration, a statutory special period may allow you to remain while the application is being decided.
Missing a re-entry deadline
If you are outside Japan and the valid period of special or regular re-entry permission expires, you generally cannot return under the previous status. Permanent Resident has an unlimited period of stay, but re-entry procedures still matter.
Revocation of status
Revocation may arise in cases such as obtaining permission through false information or, for certain activity-based statuses, not carrying out the authorized activity for a prolonged period without a justifiable reason. Simply resigning does not automatically cause immediate revocation.
New grounds affecting Permanent Residents from April 2027
From April 1, 2027, additional grounds will apply to Permanent Residents, including serious non-compliance with immigration obligations, intentional non-payment of taxes, pension or public health-insurance premiums, and certain criminal convictions. A single late payment does not automatically mean revocation; intent, duration, frequency, amount, financial circumstances, and other facts are considered.
