What happens to pension after leaving a job? Switching from Employees’ Pension to National Pension

Short answer

If you leave a job where you were enrolled in Employees’ Pension and do not immediately join Employees’ Pension at another employer, you generally need to become a Category 1 National Pension insured person if you are aged 20 to 59 and still have an address in Japan.

What should you do?

You can complete the procedure at the National Pension counter of your municipality or through MyNaPortal.

  • You become unemployed.
  • You become self-employed.
  • There is a gap before your next job.

In these situations, check whether you need Category 1 enrollment.

If you become your spouse’s dependent

If your spouse is in Employees’ Pension and you meet the conditions to become a dependent spouse, you may become a Category 3 insured person instead. That procedure is handled through your spouse’s employer.

If payment is difficult after losing your job

You may be eligible for a special exemption based on unemployment. The important point is to separate the enrollment procedure from the exemption application instead of leaving the period untreated.
